Forget Lulu and the Proclaimers, the coolest thing to come out of Scotland are Chvrches. Get them in your ears pronto.
If you’ve never heard of Chvrches (yup, the U is replaced with a V and it’s pronounced “churches”), then get this on the stereo/ipad/gramophone (they’re so trendy right now) and turn it up loud. This may be the coolest album you buy all year. Chrvches are a Glasgow-based electro-pop trio who have slowly been making waves both here in the UK and across the pond. They’ve played at Glastonbury and Coachella as well as appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
The opening riff to their anthemic ear-worm of a single ‘Get Out’ was the culmination of a day’s work in the studio with uber-producer Greg Kurstin (he’s worked with Adele and Sia to name a few), and it just gets better with every listen. Singer Lauren Mayberry is part elfin-beauty, part Doc-Marten wearing activist, and the band made headlines recently for funding a summer rock school for girls. Political aspirations aside, this single is perfect for that end of the week feel, for throwing your arms in the air, closing your eyes and just revelling in the synth-tastic pop choruses and lovingly crafted melodies. Love is Dead is scheduled for release on 25 May 2018
