Eagle Mill Boutique B&B, Houghton

Muddy says: A hidden gem of a B&B just outside pretty St Ives, with beautifully designed rooms (some with private patios and in-room roll tops), a tasty breakfast and the most beautiful grounds.

From the road out of St Ives to Houghton you’d have no idea that this charming boutique B&B is such a beautiful hidden oasis. The entire building (the white 18th century millworker’s cottage lived in by charming owner Sam and his family) plus the purpose-built extension – a delightful breakfast room and five beautiful bedrooms with huge beams and stylish modern interiors, both face away from the road towards the sprawling and beautifully kept grounds, so once you’re there it’s a tranquil retreat. The rooms are all named after local villages and our favourites are The Hemingford and The Hartford (loft room). Sonya took care of the interior touches and choose eye-catching details like And So To Bed feature four-posters, stylish tiles and sexy in-room baths.

The grounds are really special and there are major plans to make the most of the gorgeous orchard with some new Orchard Suites opening summer 2019 (stay tuned here). Breakfast is delicious and there’s a focus on sustainability by using local produce – their sausages, cured back bacon and black pudding are all produced by a local family butcher and when in season, tomatoes and mushrooms are fresh from the nearby fenlands. In autumn, you could even by lucky enough to taste Eagle Mill’s own apple juice and Sam’s homemade apple and plum jam.

It’s a traditional B&B, so don’t expect any dinner or lunch options, but you’re spoiled for choice with some of Muddy’s favourite pubs just a few minutes’ away.
