Review: Summer Saturday, Newmarket Racecourse

With the long summer holidays looming in front of us, here’s a couple of dates you should put in the diary now. I’d heard a lot about the Summer Saturday season at Newmarket racecourses, and had always wondered if they’d really be suitable and fun for the kids. They are. And they day we went, our expectations were exceeded. Not just because the kids had a great time and picked winners (50p each way kept it fun), but because the whole day was relaxed, safe, and had a real community spirit. The July course at Newmarket is a beautiful site, and on a gorgeous summer day we were free to amble around the various stalls and pop up shops before making our way to the designated family area. This sits at the bottom of the course and as well as a great view of the track, there’s ample green space, a play park with a huge tower slide and swing, free face painting (ours opted for glittery arm tattoos instead, which have yet to be washed off) and, on the day we went, lots of old school races, bouncy castles and sporting fun. Families are free to bring picnics/blankets/chairs etc, and you can use the opportunity to put on your finest, sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

If you want to splash out, I’d recommend getting tickets for the Premier Enclosure; here you can mingle with the elite of the racing world, do some first-class people watching and get up close and personal with the horses in the pretty parade ring. There’s also the option of booking a table for lunch and tagging on some fine dining to your day. There is a real sense of excitement and glamour to race days, and if you find yourself near a group of people who look like they know their fillies from their mares, then you’ll almost certainly pick up a few tips as the colourful names of the riders and runners flit through the air. Will it be Ginger Nut, Princess Power or Crimson Rosette?

And as the horses thundered up the July course and the crowds crescendoed into roars of celebrations, we all decided then and there that we’d be back. Check out the remaining Summer Saturday session below. Tickets can be booked here.
