Top 10 things to do with kids this Easter
Muddy Stilettos Cambs round up of 10 top things to do with kids this Easter
It may be April, but I’m still convinced that something terrible might happen if I take off my coat in this ‘Spring’ weather. But instead of huddling up against a radiator this Easter, take a deep breath, wrap up warm and take your children to find chocolate. Here’s a round up of 10 great Easter themed activities this weekend in Cambridgeshire (gin and cheese too if bunny shaped confectionery isn’t your thing!).
Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt at Wimpole Estate, Fri 30 Mar-Mon 2 Apr
Follow this nature themed trail through the Pleasure Grounds at Wimpole. Kids can complete the Easter hunt and wordsearch for a chocolately reward as well as help decorate a giant sheep. There’s also the walled garden, Home Farm (where there’s a good chance of spotting real life bunnies and sheep), and some great shops in the courtyard.
Wimpole Estate, Wimpole Road, Arrington, Royston, Cambridgeshire, SG8 0BW, 01223 206000
Event ticket price – £2.50, no booking required
Easter Special at Audley End Miniature Railway, Fri 30 Mar-Sun 15 Apr
If you go down to the woods at Audley End this Easter, you may just catch a glimpse of the Easter bunny himself. And word has it that he’s invited along some of his friends this year too. Expect bonnets, gifts, Easter eggs and crafting galore, oh, and of course the train ride!
Audley End Miniature Railway, Audley End Road, Saffron Walden, Essex, CB11 4JB
Event ticket price – Free for under 2’s and carers. Children and adults £11-12, booking required
Easter Showcase, The Gog, Sat 31 Mar
If you happen to be one of those rare creatures who actively dislikes chocolate (yup, they exist), then this one is for you. Head down to The Gog this weekend for a full-on day of foodie heaven. And if this line up doesn’t make you gently press a hanky to the corner of your mouth then nothing will. Featuring, amongst others, Neal’s Yard Dairy, Norfolk Gin (and there’s even a gin branded car!), Mons Cheese, and Pump Street Bakery (the unassuming Orford bakery that was name-checked at the Oscars, no less), there’s also The Gog butchers on hand who’ll be showing you some slow cooked recipes to try at home. Anything to keep the kids amused? Just a free Easter egg, colouring competition and Shetland ponies. Easter? Sounds more like all our Christmases have come at once!
The Gog Farm Shop, Heath Farm, Shelford Bottom, Cambridge CB22 3AD Telephone 01223 248352
Easter at the Fitzwilliam, Sat 31 Mar-Mon 2 Apr
If you’ve got the whole family in tow this weekend, why not plan a trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum where they have a variety of family friendly activities catering for all ages. There’s themed gallery trails, puzzles and quizzes for older children, and picture books and play mats for the youngsters. Additionally, there are two new ceramics exhibitions featuring British studio pottery and Parian busts (that’s a type of porcelain for those, i.e. me, who didn’t know).

Easter Egg Decorating, Scotsdales Garden Centre, Fri 30 March-Sat 31 Mar
Rather than face the inevitable, “Mummy, can I do some paining?” plea which comes on about day 5 of the holidays, Scotsdales Garden Centre is running egg-decorating sessions throughout the day on Good Friday. Kids can take their own eggs home and you can peruse the plants whilst they get crazy with the paints.
Scotsdales Garden Centre, 120 Cambridge Rd, Great Shelford, Cambridge CB22 5JT, 01223 842777
Event ticket price – £5, booking required
Ferry Meadows Country Park, Peterborough
There’s so much going on at Ferry Meadows; sailing, Easter hunts, volunteering, crafts and trails with the lure of a prize at the finish line. Set in the heart of Nene Park, Ferry Meadows has lakes, meadows, woodland and a riverside. Horses, dogs, buggies and bicycles all welcome. Embrace your inner Scout and get exploring!

Easter Egg-stravaganza, Sacrewell Farm, Peterborough Fri 30 Mar-Mon 2 Apr
Sacrewell has just about everything you could possibly want to do on offer over the Easter holidays. Tractor rides, lambing, chocolate, chicks, a Mad Hatter’s tea party, and breakfast with the Easter bunny (definitely sounds fun, especially as I imagine him dressed in tweed, thumbing a broadsheet and tucking into some toast and marmalade). Check the website to book packages and check prices and times.

Favourite Friends at Easter, Waterstones, Cambridge
If, like me, you’ve often wondered what fictional characters get up to at Easter, then rest assured Waterstones has the answer. They have a number of Easter activities planned for this holiday, including themed storytelling featuring the imagined antics of Spot, Peppa and other favourites, Easter card making, Spring crafts and facepainting. And if, by this stage, you’ve got chocolate smeared into your clothes and are actively recoiling at the sight of another bunny, then just grab a book and nestle yourself into a comfy chair for the rest of the afternoon.

The Importance of Being Earnest, Cambridge Arts Theatre, Mon 9-14 Apr
Okay, not strictly Easter related, but Oscar Wilde’s much loved comedy comes to the Cambridge Arts Theatre this Spring, and it’s the perfect opportunity to dress up in Victorian garb, carry a capricious handbag and proclaim with great relief that you were able to leave the perambulator at home.

Lindt Gold Bunny Hunt, Hampton Court Palace, London, Fri 30 Mar-Sun 15 Apr
I’m guessing that Henry VIII was a fan of chocolate, and 500 years later, his decadent palace is playing host this Easter to some family events in the stunning grounds of Hampton Court Palace. There’s a digital app to play with as well as lots of royal themed chocolate activities.Hampton Court Palace, Molesey, East Molesey KT8 9AU, Phone – 020 3166 6000
