Skin: Plump it Up
Pump up the volume for younger looking skin with a collagen facial
I have to tell you, this is the first time I’ve ever written on the topic of facials, as for many years I’ve been a facial sceptic. I mean, come on, do they really do anything visible long-term? With all the daily cleansers, exfoliates, masks, toners and serums is it just a clever marketing ploy? The mere mention of keeping youthful and we whip out our credit cards!
As a late convert I only wish I’d got my act together years ago. Still au ‘natural (Botox free, just!) the damage was done yonks ago with my disregard of SPF’s – meh, let’s just fry in baby oil. With a fierce anti-aging battle on these days I don’t ignore anything that promises to help in that department so when I was offered the chance to try the Plumping Collagen Facial at Health Close and Beauty I was in first gear all the way to see what all the fuss is about.
You’ll find this bijoux beauty salon just one mile over the Cambridgeshire/Bedfordshire border in the pretty tranquil village of Swine head. You’ll loose your phone signal as you drive into the village so I’m not joking about switching off from all life’s hassles. A mother and daughter duo run Close Health and Beauty in a specially built building in the grounds of this period home. I’ve had several treatments at this beauty salon before and don’t be fooled into thinking this is some rural backwoods day spa – there’s the high performance products (e.g. Resultime Multi-Corrective CC cream – you will feel like you have been airbrushed) and modern techniques you’ll find in bigger salons.
A heated massage bed awaits and I cosy up under warm towels and quilts – just leave me here for a few hours kip would be perfect. The treatment starts with the cleansing and exfoliation processes that you would expect with a facial treatment. I did particularly enjoy the silicone cleansing pads; I felt that my skin was being a really good scrub without anything abrasive.
Jan has hands of gold and she can quite literally smooth knots out of any tense back. She includes a neck and shoulder massage as part of the facial as well as a head massage.
The fun part comes as the collagen mask is applied. Hyaluronic acid is brushed on to your skin and then the collagen mask is applied with more of the liquid applied afterwards. This is all about hydrating the skin and I was left to cook for a short while. I could give Jim Carey a run for his money!
I’m normally heading off to some very important global summit and am not always keen on coming out with hair that looks like it’s been plied with a grease gun so opted for the hot foot massage instead.
Ta-da, here I am in all my glory! I wouldn’t normally shock you by exposing myself nude but I was so impressed with the end results that I felt I had to. Bearing in mind when I arrived I had bags big enough for a weekly shop my skin certainly has been plumped, tightened and hydrated.
As I applied the Nurturing Night Treatment Balm sample that night I thought about how much I peer at a computer screen, and how much I scowl at my kids. Maybe my facial muscles do deserve a good massage every once in a while, you can’t completely reduce the signs of ageing but you can certainly make it look better than it has to.
