The Cambridge Shakespeare Festival 2017

Cambridge Shakespeare Festival returns to the University’s beautiful college gardens on 13 July, offering an eclectic programme of plays throughout July and into August. Performed in full Elizabethan costume, in a unique outdoor setting with live music as accompaniment. Bring a picnic to enjoy before the performance and enjoy the idyllic surroundings. The diverse programme ensures there’s Shakespeare for everyone whether you prefer a comedy (The Merry Wives of Windsor), a romance (Romeo and Juliet), a drama (Hamlet) or a touch of fairyland (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). There’s eight plays in total spread out around the stunning city colleges grounds – including the Fellows’ Garden at Trinity College – a hidden gem that not even the students are allowed access to.

The Art Hound Gallery will open its doors this Summer to showcase the works by some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists and the world renowned giants of modern art. With a focus on original printmaking, the showcase will feature the pioneers of Pop Art, Sir Peter Blake, Eduardo Paolozzi alongside the current up-and-coming crop of pop and urban artists and the most established – Jamie Reid, Shepard Fairey and Pure Evil. You’ll be also be able to discover the most affordable ways to own your very own Warhol, Francis Bacon, Matisse or Picasso. The Art Hound Gallery have always represented Cornish art – and they’ll be featuring artists from the St Ives art community such as Sir Terry Frost, Breon O’Casey and Rachel Nicholson, alongside the internationally respected contemporary abstract painters Iain Robertson and Clare Wardman, who paint in the famous Porthmeor studios and exhibit at the Tate St Ives. London roots will not be neglected, with a selection of the finest contemporary London printmakers works on display and sale, from Francois Pont’s expansive abstracts (which are in the Victoria and Albert museum), to iconic animal portraits by Kate Boxer and eccentric illustrations by Basia Lautman.

IGGETY ZIGGETY ZAGGETY ZOOM! Join the witch and her cat on their mission to defeat the dragon in Tall Stories’ magical, musical adaptation of the classic picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.  Songs, laughs and lots of fun for children aged 3 and up and their grown-ups, in the Olivier Award nominated show that’s toured Britain and the world!

Cambridge Open Studios, weekends throughout July

Meet the artists in their studios and see how their work is made.  Each year around 350 members open their studios to the public over four weekends in July. Studios are open between 11am-6pm each Saturday and Sunday. It’s now heading into its third weekend with final two days being on 22nd-23rd July. . Look out for the free Open Studios guides will be widely available in shops, galleries, libraries and tourist information centres from early June. This big sky painting by local artist Jamie Sugg can be viewed at his studio in Swaffham Bulbeck.

David Hockney Selling Exhibition, Babylon Arts Centre, Ely, Fri 23 June – Sun 23 July

This art gallery in Ely is hosting a prestigious selling exhibition of 40 original David Hockney prints and lithographs including illustrations from The Brothers Grimm.  Hockney is one of the 20th Century’s most popular and influential artists, and a retrospective of his life’s work has recently been on display at the Tate Britain. Prices for the works, many of which are limited editions, will range from £500 up to several thousand.

The Crown Inn Open Air Cinema Weekend, Broughton, Fri 14 July – Sun 16 July

The Star & Mouse team are heading over to The Crown Inn of Broughton for a beautiful weekend of open-air screenings, live entertainment, wacky races, great food and giant garden games. Friday kicks off with Skyfall; Sat with The Lost Boys and rounding off the three day extravaganza with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Sunday. Doors open at 19.30 each evening so cyou can grab some grub from the Movie Menu.

Richard III Antic Deposition

Following their much acclaimed performance of Henry V last year, Antic Disposition return with a thrilling new production of Shakespeare’s darkly comic drama.  It will be performed in six of England’s most historic cathedrals and London’s ancient Temple Church and we’re lucky enough to have two of them in Cambridgeshire – the stunning Peterborough and Ely Cathedral.

It’s full steam ahead as Sacrewell celebrates its 21st anniversary working alongside Peterborough Society of Model Engineers for its annual Steam Rally. A chance to explore the world of miniature traction steam engines with the experts – there’ll be a small model railway, model boats and plenty of steam.

If jazz is your thing then grab a blanket and a picnic and head on down to the beautiful gardens of the Old Palace where members of Ronnie Scott’s All Stars will entertain you.  Heading the line up will be James Pearson, resident pianist and Artistic Director at Ronnie Scott’s famous Soho Jazz Club. Joining James will be other members of his Trio, plus acclaimed singer/songwriter Polly Gibbons.
